Whether you’re a pro or have never danced a day in your life, the Delta Chi Xi Honorary Dance Fraternity is encouraging students to come groove with them this weekend.
Delta Chi Xi is offering three free dance classes this weekend at The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center as part of NextNOW Fest. Student dance majors will teach all the classes.
“NextNOW Fest provides a student-driven space for UMD students to build community, interact and create together,” according to The Clarice website.
The first free class is step with Nneka Onyima on September 13, 2019, from 6-7 p.m.
According to Delta Chi Xi, Onyima “is a two-time, first-place national stepping champion and a teaching artist for the first professional dance company devoted to the art of stepping, Step Afrika!”
Directly following Onyima’s class will be hip hop with senior Gabriela Grant from 7-8 p.m.
“Outside of studying dance at the university, she has had the opportunity to study at the Summer Jazz Intensive at the Joffrey Ballet School, American Dance Festival, and Winter MODULE with Sidra Bell,” according to Delta Chi Xi.
The third free class of the weekend is with double major in neuroscience and dance Megan McDevitt. Her class is a contemporary fusion class on September 14 from 6-7 p.m.
“I hope the students can use the movement to connect to something in their own life and just have some fun!” said McDevitt.
“Our motto is ‘always open, always free’ so we hope to see many people there!” vice president of Delta Chi Xi Brianna Nelson said.
Nelson encourages students of all levels to come. She said the teachers are prepared to accommodate multiple levels.
“The main goal of these classes is to bring awareness to the community that they have a free resource right on campus, which for dance is hard to come by,” said Nelson.
If you are unable to make it to the classes during NextNOW Fest, Delta Chi Xi hosts classes almost every Sunday throughout the semester from 5-6:30 p.m.
