While many people associate Kali Uchis with her current city of residence, Los Angeles, the R&B singer actually grew up in Alexandria, Virginia. Uchis returned home to the DMV for two sold-out performances at the 9:30 Club on Tuesday, October 9 and Wednesday, October 10.
The show opened with a set from R&B singer Gabriel Garzon-Montano. The Brooklyn-based artist is accompanying Kali on her North American tour, and he proved to be the perfect supporting act. Performing songs off of his critically-acclaimed debut album, “Jardin,” Garzon-Montano set the tone for a night of strong performances.
Kali Uchis’s headlining performance was a hit. She is currently touring to support her latest album, “Isolation.” Her captivating stage presence, impressive vocals and R&B- and latin-infused music made for a stellar show.
Concluding the set, Uchis asked the crowd what song they wanted to hear for the encore. She ended the show with “Ridin’ Round” and “Speed,” and included a special a capella performance of “Lottery” to show her hometown some love.
